First Words: Deluxe

This is a simple, but well-designed app for youngsters interested in letters and early reading.  With a finger drag, your child will move letters to form the word shown in the picture.  There are many customizing options, including length of word (3-5 letters), speech on/off, and letter hints (which should be on for the youngest users).  First Words: Deluxe includes multiple language options (English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese) which is great for kids in bilingual preschool or starting bilingual kindergarten.  There is also an English phonics option, where the letters are sounded out rather than called by name.  There is something very nice about the simplicity of this app and the responsiveness to the finger drag.  It can also be a good app for children with learning challenges.

Skills: Pre-reading, Early-reading, spelling
Cost: $1.99 (with in-app purchases for additional words)
Platform:  iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad
Grade(s): Preschool, Kindergarten
