Great Apps for the Family Vacation

Going on a family trip this summer? Be sure to pack these 5 great travel apps for you and the kids!

Historic Places
Stack the States
MyNature Animal Tracks
Geocaching
Star Walk

Historic Places

This is app is great for traveling and learning about the local sites. Search for landmarks and historic places near your location and use the map and/or compass to find your way there. It includes photos and descriptions and is a great way to get kids more excited about the places they are visiting. Brought to you by the same people who brought you the Geocaching App.

MyNature Animal Tracks
Animal Tracks is another great app for the great outdoors. How many times has my family found a set of animal tracks in the wild and wondered about what animal might have passed this way? This app will walk you and your kids through a set of basicquestions that will help narrow down the list of suspects until you can find the culprit. This is a fun activity for nature sleuths young and old. Also see MyNature Tree Guide to identify trees by their characteristics.

Stack the States
We love this app! Stack the States is a great way to practice state capitals and learn state facts. Let them learn more about the states as they travel through them. Quiz each other and see who knows the most!  This one will keep your kids occupied all by themselves.  Also check out Stack the Countries.

Geocaching
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt that can be played anywhere in the world. The idea is to find a hidden treasure, a geocache, by locating it with its GPS coordinates. Geocaching is a lot of fun and a great way to teach children map skills. The geocaching community also plays a big emphasis on caring for our environment. Look for a couple of geocaches along your route. It’s a great way to keep the kids occupied and learning about their surroundings.

Star Walk
Going camping? To an outdoor concert, or just on a night hike? Here is a wonderful evening activity for the whole family. You can hold your iPhone / iPod / iPad up to the sky and it will show you what you are looking at (or would be without city light pollution or cloud cover). As much as we like to leave technology at home when we go camping, this is one app to bring with you. It has Night Mode so you don’t ruin your night vision. You will say WOW a lot when you use this app.
