Powers of Minus Ten – Cells and Genetics

Powers of Minus Ten ($1.99 universal app, best for middle school) is a great example of the kind of learning opportunities that are available by taking advantage of the unique qualities of the iOS platform. It is an amazing visualization tool that gives you the opportunity to travel into the human hand and see human skin cells up close. In the hand you will see cells in different stages and collect different parts of cells to study in the lab. Once you have collected enough items you will unlock mini quiz challenges that are fairly difficult and might require a bit of studying to master. Once a challenge is completed you will be able to see an animated visualization of the process learned in the challenge, such as mitosis or transcription. Although we recommend this app for middle school or above a younger scientist might also really enjoy it. We had a couple of issues with loading speed and occasional crashes but we are sure the developers are working on fixing that. Overall: a great biology app!

Skills: biology (cells, molecules, proteins)

  1. This is one of those ‘W0W’ apps that let’s you explore science in a way that only technology allows you to. I love being able to look deep into the human hand, first at skin level, then cells within the hand, then the elements of the cells themselves.
